After I got my first salary at my new job, I decided to take my family out for dinner – because I’ve never done it. It felt like a good gesture and it had been long since the five of us went out to a nice restaurant together. I was sure I didn’t want to go to any place in Thane and everyone agreed.
My dad’s sole condition was, “As long as I don’t have to drive and I can drink, I’m ready to come to Timbuctu (the actual place) also.”
My sister and her husband picked the place – Red Olives in Powai.
Super classy and super expensive. I was already canceling things off my shopping list for the month because basic travel was going to be a stretch after the bill arrived on this night.
It was a Sunday night and brave that we are, we had made no reservations. We waited for about thirty minutes to get a table and we were happy with the one we got. (Read “When Sharks served Sea Food” for how I would react to not getting a good table)
Dad ordered his whiskey, Akshada and I ordered wine; Maddy was not allowed to drink because he was the designated driver! The best thing of the night were the bar snacks – Peanut Masala and something like Wasabi chana.
We started with the Chicken Dimsums, which were great.
Then we ordered the Fried Bombay Duck. This was quite delicious.
The Char Grilled Prawn Lasooni is the most disappointing prawn dish I have had. Absolutely bland and well, expensive. This dish is the sole reason I couldn’t afford to watch any movies in that month – Just kidding.
We tried a few more starters, but I couldn’t click pictures because the restaurant makes a big deal about serving and I sensed the servers get irritated with my obsessive clicking.
The desserts were definitely a win!
The Gulab Jamun was SO yummy, I didn’t share even one out of the four.
Mom tried the Malai Rabdi, and what a classic it was.
The Caramel Cream was light and didn’t have the typical taste of egg you’d usually experience in a Caramel Custard.
The restaurant definitely lives up to it’s standard and manages to serve the various cuisines well. They did justice to every dish (except the prawns). The ambiance is great, music is decent, and very well located. It’s not as expensive as I made it sound if you’re going dutch. My pocket was burning because I footed the entire bill.
